L- 岩藻糖较大量地存在于海藻及树胶中，也发现于某些细菌的多糖中。岩藻糖作为糖蛋白中糖链的组成部分，广泛存在于各类细胞表面的质膜上。岩藻糖比一般六碳糖在第六碳原子上少一个羟基，所以岩藻糖比其他单糖亲水性弱，而疏水性强一些。在某些血型物质分子中的岩藻糖是一定的血型的标记。
